How to Protect Your Eyes from Sun Damage

Jun 1, 2023 | Eye Health Info

Summer is right around the corner, and we all know what that means. Trips to the beach, picnics at the park, and days spent lounging by the pool. While we all enjoy spending time in the sun, we often forget the damage that UV rays can do to our eyes. In this blog post, we’ll share all the ways you can protect your eyes during your outdoor adventures this summer!

Wear sunglasses

Wearing sunglasses is not only fashionable and fun; they also protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays. Make sure to look for sunglasses that block at least 99 percent of both UVA and UVB rays. If you wear prescription glasses, consider getting prescription sunglasses or clip-on shades so your eyes are always protected.

Wear a hat

Sunglasses aren’t the only defense against sun damage. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap can provide additional shade for your eyes and protect your face from sunburn.

Avoid direct sunlight

The sun is at its strongest between 10 am and 4 pm, so try to schedule outdoor activities for earlier or later in the day. If you must be outside during the sun’s peak hours, seek shade when you can and wear sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat to protect your eyes.

Use eye drops

The sun and wind can cause dry eyes, which can be uncomfortable and even lead to damage over time. Using eye drops can help lubricate your eyes and prevent dryness.

Schedule regular eye exams

Regular eye exams can help detect any changes in your eye health, including damage caused by the sun. Early detection and treatment can prevent further damage and help you maintain healthy vision.

We hope these tips help you enjoy a safe and sunny summer season. If you have any concerns about your eye health or need to schedule an appointment, contact us at our office in Glenside or Spring House. Stay cool and keep your eyes protected!
